The 90-minute Bikram Yoga class is the ORIGINAL HOT YOGA and can trace it origins back to the early 1970’s.
In a genuine Bikram Yoga studio, a fully trained Bikram Yoga instructor will teach the original precise 90-minute sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, in a room heated to 40º with 40% humidity, on a suitable floor surface that helps reduce the risk of injury through slipping.
Each posture, in the Bikram series, is held in a static position for a specific period of time. This follows an ancient yogic principal that teaches you to hold your body in stillness, in a particular position, with optimal alignment and use focus and breath to create physical, mental and emotional change.
Postures are separated by a brief pause to allow the body to process healing, recover, re-oxygenate and prepare for the next posture.
The class requires the first 50 minutes of the standing series postures to safely elevate core temperature, heart rate and metabolic rate, to induce physiological, biochemical and mental change in the body.
During the final 40 minutes of the floor series, the heart and metabolic rates will lower, but the slight elevation of core temperature continues to allow the body to heal.
Genuine Bikram studios may offer other classes and activities but their main focus will always be on the Original Hot Yoga 90-minute class. They will schedule the original 90-minute Bikram yoga class several times a day, every day of the week, to provide their students with the best opportunity to establish a regular consistent practice to achieve optimal health and well-being.
